This is why we can't have nice Easter egg hunts, kids: Your pushy parents. An Easter egg hunt organizer said the alleged adults in the crowd acted "kind of like locusts" and turned the hunt into a shoving match at the Pez candy company. Saturday's event in Orange, Conn., drew hundreds of people, some of whom couldn't quite abide by the rules or the starting time, reports the AP. Pez General Manager Shawn Peterson told WFSB-TV that people "rushed the field and took everything."
Happened last year at our neighborhood easter egg hunt between two dads over a prize for an easter basket - luckily no fight started and no one got hurt.
The public hunts are getting crazy. This year we went to a paid entry hunt for the first time and it was much much better. My 4 year old actually got eggs this year lol.
I don't think it's new for parents to act this way at Easter Egg Hunts. When I was in college 20+ years ago, I was part of a community service organization. We did a big Easter Egg Hunt every year. The parents were horrible! We finally made a rule that parents could only go on the field for the baby/toddler hunt. The bigger kids were on a different filed and their parents had to watch from the sidelines. That helped.
We have a neighborhood egg hunt every year, and the rule is simple: kids under 5 hunt inside the gate, kids 5 and up hunt outside the gate. It's bad enough that some of the parents don't kick their older kids out of the gate, but we've got some hover-parents helping their older kids find eggs. I mean, really; cut the cord already.
