If you're trying to insinuate that preschool has no value, then there are lots and lots of scientific studies from countries all over the world that say you're wrong.
I insinuated nothing. I responded to the statement that there is peer pressure among parents to send their kids to preschool when she was asked to explain the "expectations" (her term) that a kid would attend. Try to stay on topic.

There is peer pressure among parents to feed their children healthy food. There is peer pressure among parents to not be neglectful and abusive. There is peer pressure among parents to use car seats with their children in the car, and make sure to have them installed correctly. There is lots of peer pressure that has nothing to do with keeping up with the Joneses. When you tell her she is just "keeping up with the Joneses", you are telling her that she is making a bad choice just to make it appear that she has money. Which will make her rethink her choice, and make her think that other people only think of education as something that rich people care about. Which is one of the very attitudes that we need to break here in the United States if we want to improve our educational system.

You are doing the entire educational system of this country a disservice with that statement. Quality education is not just "for the Joneses". Trying to give your kids a quality education is not just "for the Joneses". It's the responsibility of EVERY good parent, rich, poor, or otherwise.

I fully realize that there is a subculture in this country that thinks that people who try to educate themselves or their children are just uppity traitors. I think that subculture is disgusting and destructive. And will do what I can to try to change it.

Nonsense! I never said or inferred that preschool is not a good idea. What I asked for was a clarification on the statement that it was "expected." Her response was not about educational opportunity, it was about peer pressure. You are the person who brought money into the equation; not her, not I. Why would you do that?

Ah, I see the problem. You are mistaken in the meaning of the idiom "keeping up with the Joneses" and you used it when you didn't mean to. The idiom "keeping up with the Joneses" does not mean submitting to peer pressure, it means trying to appear rich, usually when you can't afford it. You were the one who brought money into it when you used that phrase, though it looks like you didn't realize you did.

From Wikipedia: "Keeping up with the Joneses" is an idiom in many parts of the English-speaking world referring to the comparison to one's neighbor as a benchmark for social class or the accumulation of material goods. To fail to "keep up with the Joneses" is perceived as demonstrating socio-economic or cultural inferiority."

If all you meant was you felt that she was just sending her kid to preschool because of peer pressure, then just say it like that.

You don't read well for comprehension; even that which you cite to others. You are mistaken but just read the bolded sections for enlightenment. The word "or" has a significant meaning that seems to escape you.

pkbab5 is correct.

In my neighbhorhood a lot of people drive nice cars. If I decide I need a nice car too so I fit in that is keeping up with the Jonses.

However, I also notice that people wear shoes when they walk to the mailbox. I hate wearing shoes, but realize that it'd look weird to walk barefoot to the mailbox, so I wear shoes too. That is not "keeping up with the Joneses" but rather "when in Rome, do as the Romans do".

In my opinion, the choice on whether to enroll in preschool is not "keeping up with the Joneses", rather it is "When in Rome..."

Yes thank you. I was trying to remember the correct idiom for that, but I couldn't put my finger on it. You nailed it. Well done.
