I'm talking about kids 5 to 13.

If he's ready for it, sure.

My son liked games with rules. Most 3 year olds don't play games with rules.
He also is a little more physically advanced in terms of balance and coordination (like he could ride a 2-wheel bike when he was three, hit a ball, etc).
So he preferred (and still does) older kids.

What are they doing, that a 3 year old can 'play' with a 13 year old?

Playing in McD's play area and in the park (the latter being kickball and on the equipment)...also playing tag.

My son can kick a ball better than most 10-year-olds, too.

He is 43 inches and 47 lbs, just turned 3 a couple of months ago.

Yup.
Tag and actual soccer and not just randomly kicking the ball in all directions.

Kids have different skills at different ages.

I think it's normal and healthy, but not necessarily advantageous. Most kids play with mixed age groups at some point.

My younger kids are 10+ years younger then my older kids. They played all the time when they were little. I mean, they weren't playing on the older kid's level, but they did all sorts of stuff together. Often they played outside ball, swimming, going to the park. They also wrestled, cuddled up for tv shows, read books, played with legos, etc.

OP...advantage...I don't know if there is one. But if the older kids are good at being careful and you are within a reasonable distance, I don't see why not.

I asked because the 12 - 14 year olds in my neighborhood ride bikes, shoot hoops, play baseball, and rollerblade (among other things). No way a three year old would be anything but in the way and unable to keep up.

The exception might be siblings, but even then....

Original Poster, why not let your child be a child and play with who he is comfortable with. Also, I don't know of any 13 year old children who want a 3 year old around and many siblings with that wide of an age gap don't want their little brother or sister around when their 13 year old friends are over.
Why do you stress so much about all of this? It really is not necessary to voluntarily complicate being a parent.
