Some doctors do it and others don't. We switched pediatricians because our daughter refused to go to a male doctor anymore, even though he had been her doctor since she was born. The female doctor we switched to insisted on a fairly detailed exam and made me hold my daughter down while she had a look. We never went back. In hindsight, I should have refused that part of the exam because my daughter was so obviously uncomfortable.

The first time my daughter saw her current doctor, she said, "I just want you to know, my underpants are never coming off in this office. If you're going to think I'm weird or have something wrong or insist on having a look when I've said no, then I'll just leave now and not waste your time." The doctor said that was fine as long as my daughter would tell her if there was ever a problem inside the underpants.

I'm 42 and i've yet to have a physical that didn't involve at the very least the hernia check.. From age 7 or so on, i'd say that I was asked if there were any problems. Retracting the foreskin wasn't applicable.

Of course, at my age.. There's poking and prodding in more places than before.

Just wait 'til you get past 50.

OP, at 50-something, my doc looks checks once a year. Relax.

And this is different because, if it isn't clean, it can pretty easily get infected.
You are responding to a Mom that has three sons--all au naturale.

The foreskin keeps it clean. Do they check to make sure girls are keeping all their crevices clean?
Normal bathing will keep it clean. No, I really don't think it can tighten back up. LEAVE it alone! Teach your sons normal hygiene rules.

I was seldom in the room, but from reading the notes, yes.

Who says the OP hasn't taught his son? Considering how little time most boys spend on hygiene it seems like a good idea to check once a year...maybe it's less traumatic for a doctor to look than dad...or definitely mom, especially at his age and older!

From age 13 on, I had my son do his physicals alone, I would sit in the waiting room, and at the end doctor, would tell me anything I NEEDED to know, So my son could talk to/tell doctor thing He needed to know, that I may not need to know.

Thru Middle school age, Doc would check him but would do the hand inside the boxers. No boxer down. (Not that my son would care, If i saw him.)

Very funny. This was a conversation today.

Since my daughter was little, they quickly checked insides her labia and outside. A few seconds.

My son they check his testicles for masses and a quick look.

My kids HATE it. I opt out when I can, on their behalf.

I cant remember one single time doctors checked my private area until I was a teen and sexually active.

P.S. The doctors office has a curtain area. It seems like it is up to the doctor to gage when the kid needs privacy and ask the parent to step behind the curtain. My son was 8, my daughter is 9 now and I volunteer because I know her.
