WWII.

My dad was looking for an chance to get off his ship and saw a notice for a wiener roast being given by a local church young adult group for the sailors. He and a buddy signed up for it, thinking they could cut out once they got there and go dancing instead. He got there, met my mom and that was that... He sailed away with her heart, they were married after the war and enjoyed 48 years together until he died.

It was just after the war and my Mother went on a date with a guy who had no car. He asked his friend (my Dad) if he would give them a ride. Mom ended up liking my Dad better than the guy she went out with, so they started dating.

My parents met at college. I attended their alma mater, and that's where my wife and I met too.

My mother, who did not even know English when she started Kindergarten in Denver, turned out to be a "whiz kid" & graduated HS at age 16.

Started college at CU in Boulder & to make extra money worked as a science & math tutor.

She was delighted to have been assigned as the tutor for a CU football player who was a very valuable football star but unable to pass an academic class to save his life.

All her friends were SO jealous that she was going to supposedly have all this "one-on-one" time with this guy. Except; this guy had this really nerdy roomie. This dorky kid who was literally 4 inches shorter than her & was ALWAYS there; my dad!

According to my dad he was always there INTENTIONALLY after seeing her for the very first time; sort of a "love at first sight" thing (he had no intention of letting his roomie alone with her).

Eventually my mom lost interest in the football star; she called him a "lunkhead". But she accepted a date from my dad!

When they got married she was disowned by her family as she married outside of her culture/arranged marriage. That lasted for 10 years ... But one year, one month, one day & one hour after they married & halfway around the world (Japan); I was born!

In 2 days; they will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary!

I think my parents met in a restaurant in Oklahoma; she worked there and he was in the Army and must have been based there at the time. She was married to someone else. She must have divorced him quickly; my parents ran away to Kansas City and got married. I was born 4 years later.

My father and mother met at their sister's and brother's wedding, respectively. My father's younger sister was marrying my mother's older brother.
