It depends on the maturity of the two teens AND legal requirements of the state. If the 19 year old is a very experienced college sophomore male "player" and the 17 year is young naïve female high school junior who has never dated before it could be a disaster (at least for her).

However, if both teens are within a year or two of the same grade in school and are fairly similar in experience it can be a good match.

It also depends on what your state considers "age of consent". In most states having sex would probably OK but don't just assume that it is legal unless you have a desire to be arrested for statuary rape.

Well I wish I had known then that TN allows 4 years difference. I would have slept a lot better, lol.

If there is some problem for you, examine the quality of your parenting practices and methods.

Whats the issue? IF he was 29 and she was 27 would you over-react? How about 59 and 57?

Do you really want to condemn him to a life on a sex offense registry for life if they actually sleep together? WOuld you want that if the above ages were the ages they slept together at and he COULD be registered simply because she was not the same age as he?

YOU SIMPLY SAID "DATING"....you Did NOT say "SLEEPING WITH".

Lets see: at 17 she/he can legally quit high school, drive a 5000 lb vehicle, work and handle money, and will, within less than a year soon be of legal age to go fight for the county, smoke cigarettes and who knows what all the new pot laws, and etc etc etc.

If they are 'mature enough' to quit school, drive and work, even be emancipated, then they should be "mature" enough to decide whom to date, even if he was 26.
Now if she was 17 and he was , say 45, 52, I MIGHT have a problem with it.

I'm 53, and in my parents era, it was perfectly acceptable for a man to be up to 10 years older than she, and to marry within that age difference range, and often with her {or him if roles reversed} just coming out of high school. IT was thought the 28 year would have a job and a living arrangement enough to support the other. If HE was 28, he would hopefully have had his military service completed and/or college completed and had a steady job and "ready to settle down" and raise a family.

My mother: graduated High school in June, and in August turned 18 the week before they married and my father was {shes passed} 9 years older than she. perfectly acceptable. YES they dated while she was a senior in HS>

If it was good enough "back then" then why not now?

SHeesh.

I wouldn't really care, as long as the boy was a decent, respectable person (I have a daughter). I would insist on meeting him and I would expect certain things, such as him coming to the door to get her (no honking the horn in the driveway), and hope he was gentlemanly (opening doors for her, etc.) Maybe the media is jading my husband and I a little, but with stories of boys getting insanely jealous and not able to handle rejection, we worry about stalkers and her getting involved with an abusive, jealous, overbearing type of guy. I drill her on that stuff! Of course, I had a personal experience with a guy like that before I met my husband, so I know what I'm talking about.
