In our district as well..I would imagine it is like that all over.

My kids understand that the phone they use does not belong to them. It belongs to mom and dad.

If I have a concern, I simply ask for the phone and check it. Same goes for their email, Facebook or Instagram.

But to be honest, both of my kids are pretty good online. They understand the dangers and have avoided drama using social media.

WAY too young to have their own Instagram account. What they put online the entire world can see (in theory) and it will be out there FOR EVER. There is absolutely no need for a teenager to have that kind of freedom.. they are way too immature to make good decisions. Also creates unhealthy narcissism, IMO... of course every teen is different.. most seem to be obsessed with pouty-faced fish-lipped selfies with a "come get me" look... others may want to post arty photos of old buildings or whatever... but either way, that's too young and asking for trouble. As the parent, it's OK to say NO!
(and who cares if 'everyone' else has one..? Doesn't make it right...)
