My wife recently asked me if our kids will have the same protruding ears that I have. I did have otoplasty when I was 12. No one else in my family has protruding ears, including my father and brother.
Is it possible that my ears were caused by a birth defect and MIGHT not be genetic?? It seems most kids inherit their father's ears. Wondering what you all think... Considering my situation that my brother and father don't have protruding ears, maybe mine was in fact a defect and wondering if that won't be passed on?
Honestly, I'm a little gun-shy to have kids because of this.... Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I wouldn't want my kids to be bullied or need to go through surgery.
I don't know if it's genetic or a birth defect. I have a hunch that it's genetic because it runs in my mother's family. But I think it would be easy for a plastic surgeon to fix and wouldn't require much. It is probably a minor surgical procedure (I'm guessing).
My mother was born with ears that protruded and her mother taped them back, as soon as she was born, and kept them taped back for weeks. It seemed to work and my mother's ears only protruded very slightly after that. I am not endorsing this, though or saying it would work for anyone else.
I don't know why someone would hesitate to have children because of something so minor.
