A married couple who engage in the parenting of "x" number of children that they can afford to care for can't really be called "breeding". Having children and being parents are two different things.

Agree. It's absolutely offensive.

What if we went around calling all childless people 'barren'?

It's not that it's offensive. It's that it is MEANT to be offensive.

As in: Ugh, that breeder. God, she's stupid.

NOT: Wow, she's quite a breeder. I admire her.

I thought the term breeder was a gay euphemism for straight people. In that sense, I've referred to myself as a "breeder" here and on other discussion forums. I don't find *that* usage of the word to be offensive in the slightest.

Full disclosure: I am a straight married male who is child-free entirely NOT by choice. It's a lonely type of existence as I have nothing in common with people who are parents, and also people who are child-free by choice. There's not a lot of MeetUp groups out there for someone like me.

I have to wonder how much time is given to contemplating this stuff. I mean seriously? "I'm not childLESS, I'm childFREE"?

Jesus. Who cares? If you don't want to have kids, don't have kids! If you do, then have them!

Come to me in 30 years and tell me what difference it made as to what you were called during your childbearing years. "Breeder", "Childless", "Childfree".

It's kinda like the importance put on what age the baby rolls over. 1 month? 3 months? 6 months?

In 5, 10, 15, 20 years.....it makes no difference.

Do we really need more stuff to be offended by?

The first might be offensive but the second is downright creepy.

Breeder term used to cover people who just live to have kids. I mean, there are other things in life to preoccupy your time.....get a hobby...

Completely agree. And I feel "childless" and "breeder" are offensive on about the same level. "Breeder" implies an animalistic tendency to have babies. "Childless" implies you are lacking something. I'm on board with the term "Childfree," but I don't want to be called a "breeder." It doesn't bug me to any great extent (my panties aren't in the bunch over it), but I'd prefer other terms (e.g., "parent" ).

Trying to be offensive to people with different views than your own solely because of said views is childish in my opinion. Which as a parent, I can ignore to focus on the more important things in life, such as my family and friends.
I agree with this! I see it as silly and very immature to call someone a breeder. I stop paying attention and taking someone serious the moment they mention breeder.
