Hi all, we moved to a different state where COL is much less. Just was curious how much you spend on a teachers gift (or if you don't buy one at all) for the end of the year. What do you give and do you also give to the bus driver. I'm asking because I had an amount in mind and my DH said it was too much. My neighbor said the same.

Just curious what others do! Thanks!

I do not give end of the year gifts. They get enough with their birthdays, holidays, and don't forget Teacher appreciation WEEK was just a couple of weeks ago. That's enough!

When I've been roommom, I send out a notice that it's not required, but if they wanted to give a book, that they're done with, for the teacher's library, it would be much appreciated. I stress this is not to be a new book so they don't have to spend more money.

Our school does not do teacher appreciation week and I don't know their birthdays. I give for Christmas and end of year, but looking to see what others do. Thanks for your reply

$20 giftcard to Target, Walmart, etc...and thank you card.

Stay away from gifts, my mother was a teacher and would come home with arm fulls of "cute," "creative," "funny" gifts.. all it did was take room in our garbage can. Anything you see on Etsy or Pinterst...don't do it, their response will be fake, like the rest of the world they don't want junk in their home.

If you have a class parent, think of getting parents together to pitch in cash for one big gift-card, it will be more useful.

as for the bus driver, we chipped in $5 with the rest of the bus-top families for a Dunkin Donuts GC.

Or to a restaurant. I did this years ago (as an end of elementary school and end of middle school gift) and was amazed at the number of teachers who wrote our kids back, thanking them for just REMEMBERING them.

I would agree only if you know the teacher likes that restaurant.

My Wife's a teacher. A lot of gift are hand-made. Some are a $5 mug (some of which have interestingly had "edgy" writings on them). I don't think a gift has ever exceeded $20, and even that expensive is rare. Most often it's a $10-20 Dunkin donuts gift card. Once in a blue moon, it's a bottle of wine.

BTW I, oops, I mean my wife, prefers the DD gift cards. The wine wasn't bad either.

Truly, most teachers are going to appreciate any gesture at all. I've been in public education for 14 years. A sweet handwritten note from a student or parent (note from a parent is SUPER rare, btw!), a little food treat, a small gift card. Personally, I've always like anything a student has picked out for me--even the "weird" or "common" gifts like coffee mugs or one time, someone gave me a set of 8 glass dessert plates. I still have those dessert plates 10 years later.

My daughter has had a really amazing teacher this year, and I've been super impressed as another educator. And she's young and pretty new, so I decided I'm going to write a little note of thanks to her, but also email the principal and just say how wonderful she has been all year in my daughter's class. The kids just adore her, and I know from experience that sometimes really great teachers fly under the radar and their principals don't know how good they are.

Same here. If at all--some years I just don't have my act together to get all those gift cards before the end of the year!

I gave $20 gift cards to either Staples or Office Max to my cousin's teachers. I'm told they are still talking about that.

A lot of teachers buy supplies for their classrooms, as well as have "extras" for students of limited means.

I've given some of my adjunct college instructors $20 gas/grocery store cards because I knew they were broke.
