Curious to know what other parents do about bedtimes during the Summer and/or when there's no school (vacations, holidays etc). I have a 9 and a 6 year old and will probably push back bedtime by about 30 mins. Now that they are older and are able to sleep in (esp the 9 yo), I don't worry so much about adhering to as rigid of a schedule as I did when they were younger. Moreover, in the Summer there's always the added challenge of the days being longer/late sunset.

Do you make no changes? A nominal change? Follow an anything goes approach? How old are your kids?

My kids are 8 and 9. Bedtime in the summer is moved from 8 to 8:30. If they are outside playing and having fun we sometimes let them go to 9pm.

I have a 5 and 10 year old. I occasionally let the five year old stay up late. Unfortunately everytime I do it always ends up biting me in the bum. I always swear never again. He never sleeps in and ends up a grumpy handful.

The ten year old I do let stay up either a half or full hour past their normal bedtime depending on how busy the day was and our plans for the next day. I have been allowing this for at least three years. He sleeps in and will put himself to bed early if tired.

I let my kids stay up until about 10 or so during the summer, sometimes later.

I still have that experience with the 6.5 yo and walk the line between letting her stay up later, but rarely as late as her older sister. In fairness to kids this age, they often don't have the physiological capability to sleep in as well as older kids do, so that's why I try and watch it. I can definitely see a change compared to about a year ago, and now I'm not as anxious about those occasions where she stays up really late because she can bounce back more easily.

My oldest will also put herself to bed when she gets really tired. The first time she did it, she was about 7 and my husband and I couldn't believe it. We felt like we really turned a corner, LOL.

No, because they wake up at the same time and are grumpy and jerky all day.

I do as my six year old will just sleep later if she goes to bed later. In the summer she normally goes to bed between 8 and 9 (rest of the year at 7:30) and when we're on holiday she goes to bed when we do so around 11/12.

Problem with this summer is that my work starts at half 6 so she'll have to go to bed early the nights before days I take her to daycare or work. When OH takes her she doesn't have to get up so early.

Yup. No schedules to follow, baths optional.

When they were younger absolutely! I loved the summer months with my kids staying up a bit later.
