And when the child finds out Santa isn't real? I've read numerous accounts of heartbroken children who were devastated when they found out Santa isn't real. How is that really any different?
Its not.
Again, we see this differently. I see it as a harmless prank. You don't. Whatever. But the hyperbole on this thread is thick.
Santa IS real. He is my alter ego, who buys the stuff that I would never buy.

Santa is real. He taught us the spirit of happiness and giving unto others that continues after children no longer believe. My children accepted that and weren't hurt when they found out no one was sneaking down the chimney. We still follow NORAD each Christmas Eve to see where he has been spotted. He certainly gets around.
My kids have played pranks on me that they knew would "upset" me. Like leaving a fake mouse in the tub.
You cry at the sight of a fake mouse?
Considering you put upset in parentheses, I'm guessing you don't actually get upset, you just pretend to for the sake of your children. You are in on the joke. There is a big difference between a kid prank that doesn't cause any hurt feelings, and a prank that is intended to make your child cry.
I like to joke around and be silly, but I would never come up with a prank where the whole purpose is to get my child to cry or become angry. That is not funny to me, and it certainly is not funny to a child. I would feel horrible if a joke/prank upset my child as much as some of the kids in the Halloween candy videos. A joke is supposed to be funny to all involved. I would never make a joke at my child's expense. That just isn't something parents should do.

That's what I say as well, Santa is the spirit of the season. I believe in Santa because of what he represents, happiness and generosity. To me, its not a lie, but I guess it depends on how parents treat the subject and how they respond as their kids get older.

I cry when I see real mice. And no, I'm not pretending.
Seriously? We can't go into political stuff on here. Think about Jimmy's position. And the snowflakes that don't like where he stands. You know the I got mine and screw everyone else crowd.
I think it's terribly cruel. "Pranking" a teen might be different; they're old enough to understand the point of the prank and to maybe "prank" you back later. Doing this to a small child just seems downright cruel.

Yeah... Still not understanding why you think this is a political issue. It's not. I have no problem with Jimmy Kimmel, I'll watch his show occasionally. Just because I don't like one 5 minute segment that he does once a year, has nothing to do with anything else he says or does.
But you didn't say they put a real mouse in the bathtub.
Would you still find it funny if your children started putting real mice, or even rats, in your bed while you slept?
Um yeah because that's totally the same thing as a harmless prank. Come up with a logical analogy and I'll answer you.
I said they put a fake mouse in the tube and me, being terrified of mice and thinking it was real FREAKED until I found out it was fake.
Then I did this crazy thing - I laughed my butt off with my kids.
