My friend has a 5 year old son and she wants to join me and another friend to go party and travel in Europe for 3 weeks.

She is a single mother, so she said she knows a family from her sonís school who said they will look after her son while she is gone.

Do you travel without your children?

Yes. Usually one week out of the year I go somewhere by myself, usually to visit friends in another part of the country. I love it. Its a nice break!

Anecdotal, but I have never met a parent who would leave their 5 year old to vacation for 3 weeks, let alone with another family and not members of their own family. Most parents I know get twitchy after being away from the kids for a few days and they're only gone for up to a week.

No, I never did. I found vacations that we could all enjoy.

Absolutely. We were fortunate to have parents able and willing to travel several states to watch our three. They enjoyed it, and so did the kids. My parents set the example by also leaving myself and my siblings when we were kids.

I have left for a few days or up to a week -- usually for business trips or conventions. I don't think I've ever left for a vacation, but that's not to say I wouldn't if I had the $$ and opportunity (usually it's the $$ that's in the way). 3 weeks feels like a really long time to leave a child, especially a young child. Some of my siblings/sib-in-laws have gone on "girls' weeks" away from kids for up to a week. Don't know anyone who has left for 3 weeks.

Yes! My husband I do an adult weekend, I do a girls weekend and he does a boys weekend every year. Three weeks seems a bit long, but there may be a reason she is going for so long.

Yes, we took family vacations and my husband and I would occasionally take a trip without the kids. Nothing wrong with it, we enjoyed ourselves and did adult activities and the kiids enjoyed being spoiled by the grandparents or aunts/uncles. Three weeks seems a little long but 1 week was perfect for us.

Not a 5 year old for 3 weeks, no. I left them younger for about 5 days, and for maybe 3 days at a time a couple times. Not many people have the freedom from work or other responsibilities to be able to leave for 3 weeks at a time, even if they don't have kids.

I haven't ever been a single parent. If I was, and the ex was reliable, I could see leaving the child with the other parent for that long. Maybe. I would never rely on a friend for that long.
