At some point, someone had a conversation about what the board cost. And fellow posters in this thread aren't necessarily debating the exact circumstances of the OP. We are by extension discussing the ethics of the situation in general.

And in general, the cost of the board would be discussed. And therein lies where it would be deception if the kid pockets the difference.

Just my two cents, but if I broke my friend's item, I'd reimburse them whatever they paid for it. Let's say I wore my friend's $40 sweatshirt and got a stain on it that wouldn't come out. If I gave her $40 and she chose to buy a $20 shirt rather than replace the one that was damaged, I wouldn't feel cheated or insulted. I'd feel like I settled my debt fairly, and what she chooses to do with the money is her business, not mine.
