To the best of my memory my parents did not prepare me at all. It was just like my entire life I stayed home and did stuff, went to the play ground, then suddenly BAM I have this new activity I have to go to every day for a longer period than I had lived up to that point.

I figure there has to be better ways to prepare child than that. So how were you prepared and for those with children how have you prepared them?

My kids all attended a meet and greet/open house/meet the teacher/orientation. I think that's the norm, at least in the various places we have lived.

OP - sounds like you were a firstborn? That's true, firstborns don't usually have all that much of an introduction into public school except maybe the tiny amount Mattie says if they have a stay at home mom who didn't put them in any kind of daycare/mother's day out program. That's how I was raised, and I was SO grateful! - and I had a sister a year older so I witnessed her going to kindergarten and could fully imagine what kindergarten would be like for me, from her experience.

My kids were born in the 90's, and they had mother's day out two mornings a week from 9-12, when they were 4, so it kind of eased them into the school type setting.

Kids who are in full time daycare probably don't experience much of a shock at ALL.

I don't remember. I was 5. I take that back. I do remember my mom walking me to the school to make sure I knew the route.

My kids had a day where they would drop off their supplies, see the classroom, meet the teacher. It was nice because all of that wasn't new on the 1st day.

Lol! That'd exactly what my mom said to! (Seriously).

I loved kindergarten. ..that would change though when I got to first grade where corporal punishment was a course ...constantly enforced. I was painfully shy ..terrified...

We just went to school on the first day. It wasn't bad because I was with my twin brother. We went to the same schools and same classes right up until high school graduation. We even went to the same college for the first two years.

Don't remember.
I was 4, which was below the cutoff, so I had to meet with this lady for an interview/test (I remember the office she had).
Other than that...don't recall much preamble.

My kids' school had summer playdates on and off campus and the teachers (and their teaching fellows) come during the summer to our home for a "get to know you" meeting with the family/kid.
