We know a Bartender named Rhonda. Don't dare start singing, "Help, help me, Rhonda" to her.

Yes, you have to consider names in Pop Culture.
My friend Mary Lou gets the singing, too. "Hello, Mary Lou, goodbye heart."

Some people who are younger might not get references, though. There was a woman on here who wanted to name her son Omar. I said, "Everyone will automatically think, 'Omar the Tentmaker'." She had no idea what the reference was.

It's an old, silent movie, but the name has long been a not-so-nice reference to where overweight women buy clothing.

Peggys are almost always Margarets. I've never known anyone whose given name was actually Peggy.

Tammy is one of those names I have never liked. My personal stereotype of the name is a girl who is unintelligent and often trashy. I think Tamara or another version would be more favorable.

Right. And I actually love the name Margaret. It's old fashioned, and in my opinion, missed.

It's fine for a teenage girl, but you don't want your Tammy Lou there fifty years later, wearing a beehive hairdo and the same frosted lipstick, taking orders for Hunger Busters and Dilly Bars!

I agree. It’s one of those good old names like Nancy, Ann, Jane, Susan.

A young woman (she told me she was 23) who helped me at the cell phone store was named Susan. When I saw that, I told her that while there are a lot of people my age named Susan, it hasn't been a name commonly given to girls for many decades now, and so I was surprised. She said she was named after her aunt and that she was the only person in her school with the name.

With the possible exception of Ann, those are horrible names for a child today. Why would a parent do that to their child?
