Yes, there are definite revisions that should be made to the system. I keep thinking about the young African American man from some state in the south who was 18 years old and was put in prison just because of oral ... with a caucasian girl who was only a year younger than him. He was convicted as a sexual predator, even though the girl reiterated time and again it was consensual. I believe he just got out of prison b/c the courts overturned his conviction. But he was in prison for over a year or two. Absurd.

We are in Virginia and peeing in a yard does not fall under the sex offenses. That is more along the lines of indecent exposure, but it is definitely a nuisance, ot a felony.

We live in a very nice neighborhood and we had a young man (19 or so) who was convicted of sex crimes against a child. These included child porn (production and distributing), indecent liberties with a minor child ( several counts) and on and on. When this guy was released he was ordered to file as a sex offender.

He moved in with his parents who live her and within a month, he was gone. The neighbors made sure of it.

In another case, a friends daughter was riding her bike with friends and a man approached her in a car and told her to get in. She did not, rode her bike through backyards and bushes to get to a phone.

She was able to get a license plate, car make, description of the man and low and behold, there he was on the sex offender website! He was questioned and, of course denied it and that was the end of the story.

These people don't change. I believe they should have their day in court because false allegations occur, false identifications, etc but after they are convicted, let them stay locked up. They offer nothing to society.

anyone know what "injury or risk of injury or impairing morals of children" means??
It must have to be something sexual right? Since it is a sex offender?

I've read a definition and still dont get it.

Anyway this could be a minor thing?? Not really right?

Yes, the impairing morals and injury imply a sex act of some sort. Do you know someone who has been convicted of this?

It does not sound like a minor thing to me... minor to me is a speeding ticket, dogs off a leash, but not something to do with "impairing morals" or any verbage with injury and children. Not good!

Something to think about if moving.

There are so many people within a mile in a city or suburban setting that it would be hard to move without being near someone that has a record like that.

You should be able to get his arrest record from the court system. It would probably give you enough specifics to give you a pretty good idea what you're dealing with. I would request it for peace of mind.

Well, we broke a contract on a house we were supposed to buy because there was one who had preyed upon a child under the age of 12 living two doors down! But there are two within a couple of blocks of our house now. Neither of them were convicted of preying on children, just adults.

Honestly, the ones who are NOT registered are the ones I'm more concerned about... I assume my next door neighbors are nice, sweet people, but for all I know, they're not. It's hard to tread the line between "careful" and "paranoid" in this society.

Of course it would be great if there were nothing but fine upstanding citizens in my town, but that's not reality.

Checking the sex offenders listing is all well and good, but just for that moment in time and just for the ones who have been caught and convicted - the real good ones don't get caught.

i never thought about people check the sex offender registry before buying a house. I guess that is something to think about. We happen to have a registered sex offender adjacent to us, in our back yard! he was arrested for exposing himself to the daughter of the District Attorney in the next county over. He is now over 21 and lives there with his parents. he actually grew up here and he is rarely seen in public. most neighbors never really talk about it much.
