Oh, for pity sake, who would let their baby go near the stairs in these things? My granddaughter loves hers. Back when my kids were using them, 40 years ago, there were times when they took a face plant in them, but they are more stable now.
I believe they ARE, or can be very dangerous.
But only when a child is not being properly monitored....which is very easy to have happen..especially in a walker.
I was really happy to have one for my little ones, and I believe that despite their danger people WILL continue to put their little ones in them....no stopping that as long as they are available..handme down...second hand store etc
I think that almost ANY product for babies can prove dangerous unless the child is closely monitored as he/she should be at such a young age...it's a 24/7 job.
The parents are to blame if the child gets hurt while in one......it always boils down to lack of supervision....

I didn't let my baby, 21 years ago, go near stairs without me period. I keep seeing this article and they show a walker from the 70s/early 80s. Anyone ever watch the movie Mr. Mom? The pre-toddler was running all over the house in a walker, eating chili. LOL. I can't tell from these articles if they are talking about those kinds of walkers (took not much effort from the kid, they we placed IN them) or the kind my child used for a short time when she was learning to walk, sort of like a walker elderly folks use. Anyhow, the one my child used for a very short time could absolutely be dangerous without supervision! Same as if we didn't watch her while she crawled and then toddled around stairs, toddled on a hard floor, grabbed things that could fall on her head, and etc... . Point being the infant and toddler years are fraught with dangers and the only thing keeping those babies safe is constant supervision. It's just the way it is. It passes.
I thought everyone already knew this. When my oldest was a baby 17 years ago, they were already saying not to use walkers.
I banned walkers in my house which had two sets of stairs in 1974. DH thought I was overreacting, but I stood firm. This used to be one of the most common household accudents. They are not needed—babies actually need to crawl—and are unsafe.
Th4e article says that nearly 3/4 of kids treated for walker injuries in emergency rooms fell down stairs in the walker.
If parents aren't putting a baby gate across a stairwell to protect their kids, it doesn't matter if the kids are in a walker or not; they're at risk of falling down stairs without a walker. Are that many parents really that careless? I don't understand this. And the obvious conclusion from that statistic is not to get rid of the walkers; it's to put a barrier across the stairwell. How could so many parents be unaware of the need for that? Why hasn't that been in the media?
