Because when our small children start watching things with large amounts of violence, they start misbehaving more, being more violent towards parents and siblings, start saying inappropriate things, start having more nightmares, and I start getting calls from school about things they've said or done there, and I have to miss work and go pick them up, etc.
This is how I found out that my 7 year old had figured out how to use You Tube on the smart TV. I didn't even know the TV did that.... I do now lol.
There's a theory in communication studies about cultivation theory, that is if someone spend enough time to watch TV, they will assume that the reality is similar to what they saw on tv. Psychologically, there're lots of experiments showing about the behavioral changes when kids are being exposed to violent contents.

Parents don't typically think of blood and gore as 'fun' or 'awesome'.
Most people tend to outgrow that mindset as they get past their early twenties and realize that real violence is not something to aspire to.

There was a perception that violence affects brains. Studies remain inconclusive. Better safe than sorry IMO, especially since Mortal Kombat was just an awful movie from start to finish.
If you were a teen in the 90's, you are too old to be asking this question now. If you are a teen now, why would you care what parenting in the 90's was like?
