I have never heard any of my students make fun of one of their classmate's name, and I've heard some interesting names. I don't see why so many people think kids would make fun of the name Oblina. They're not going to associate it with drug companies, and they're not going to change it into some other random word. The only ones who are going to make fun of the name are adults who have poor social skills. I would never think to make fun of the name Oblina. I might think it's an unusual name, and maybe look it up, but I would never think to tell someone their names sounds like a drug or makes me think of obesity (because it doesn't).

You must be joking or losing your hearing. Kids used to say Debsi does Dallas to me all the time.. I also had the unrelated and also unwanted nickname Little Debsi snack cakes.
The name itself doesn't even have to be funny for kids to find a way to make fun of it. And I don't think the entire class full of 12 year olds had seen the apparently classic porn film (pre internet, mostly), yet they still knew about it.
As for Oblina, I just think it's ugly. I also find it strange that so many parents want to distinguish their child with an unusual name. Help your child stand out from the crowd in other ways - not by making up a silly name that they have to spell out for people their entire life.
OP, why don't you name the baby Lena? It's a real name, it's not common, it's not hard to spell, and it's pretty.

I'm talking about current kids, not kids in the 70s. Kids today seem to be a lot more accepting. And with a lot of kids having more unique names, I don't think it crosses a lot of minds that their classmates should have names like Jack and Emily, and not Mycroft or Hadassah.

I'm talking about kids in the late 80's and 90's actually. That damn porn movie was so iconic it was whispered and hissed at me for several years.
If kids today are nicer, that's great. I have trouble believing it, but I'll meet them in a few years when my baby goes to school!

I don’t know where you live, but I worked with children until very recently, and they are not *more accepting*. If anything, they are more harsh and cruel, a reflection of society in general. They can be quite awful with each other, including making fun of a child’s name, which is bullying.
To the OP, just try to envision your child at different stages of life: as a school child, a working professional, an old person...will the name you choose fit them at various stages of their life?

What do you guys think of the name "Oblina"? It sounds pretty feminine and cute. Your thoughts?
I think it's important to choose a name for a child that has some meaning and history behind it.
If you are considering the name "Oblina" for a child, you should first learn what that name means. In Serbo-Croatian, the word "oblina" means "roundness, plumpness (especially of female body, i.e. breasts and buttocks)."
Not a very good choice of name for a child, IMO. But maybe a funny choice for a cat.
I did not read the complete thread. Just some posts. If you are thinking about a name. Google search images see what comes up. Also take note of spelling. Refrain from alternative, misspelled names. Look up Rx meds some look like names.
