Post News, Kid's Book on Plastic Surgery.

A new picture book about plastic surgery aims to explain why mom is getting a flatter tummy and a 'prettier' nose.

When she was pregnant with her son Junior, who turns nine this month, Gabriela Acosta ballooned from 115 pounds to 196. Acosta lost the weight but wound up with stretched, saggy skin. Even her son noticed it. He told her that her stomach looked "pruney," the result, he thought, of staying in the shower too long.

Should the title be "My Beautiful New Mommy"
or
"My Surgically Enhanced Mommy"?
Reminds me of when one of my little preschoolers walked into our classroom and announced that her mommy was "getting new boobies." If she had walked into class carrying the book, maybe I would have read it to the kids, but if that picture is any example of what the illustrations are like, I am unimpressed.

MNNative will become famous soon enoughMNNative will become famous soon enough
I think it's sad we even have to talk to our kids about this, but the truth of the matter is, surgical procedures to lift/tuck/nip/whatever are of MASSIVE popularity and though I have no experience in this area, I can only assume could be pretty confusing to a child. So, in that regard, and given the society we live in, this book is probably very "useful" in this day and age. Would I pick it up as a "cool read" for my kids?...um, no. But for those who see it relevant in their life I don't see a problem.

I am sure that this is a book that I wouldn't read to my child whether or not I, or someone close to us, was about to embark on the plastic surgery route.

It is one thing to let a child know that Mom or Dad is having surgery to correct an abnormality or deformity with plastic surgery, but quite another to give our kids the impression that body image is so important that if there is a feature that we don't like that we can change it simply for aethetic purposes.

Aren't we trying to rid our culture of this "you must look young and beautiful" stigma that is so pervasive? There are other ways to let one's child know that Mom is going to have to go to the hospital, but everything will be fine, without telling him Mommy is going to go under the knife to become prettier. Ugh!!

This book is at the bottom of my "suggested reading" list.

I agree! When I heard about this book, my reaction was a resounding "gag!"

That's kind of disturbing. Why would you discuss this with a small child

What's next, Mommy's getting a pap smear?
