i went to a catholic elementary school and would not let anyone in without vaccines. same when i went to public, the hs, then college...
guess it depends on the school

I don't know about the past, but I know that in New Jersey you can get religious exemptions from vaccines. I was thinking of moving there and that was one of my main concerns. So I did the research. I can get them in New York as well. My son didn't get full range of vaccines - just selected ones.

also just be careful with the "mixed" shots. i dont remember the names, but it's where they can either give 3 or 5 (1 is a mix of 3vaccines together--and contains murcury). i chose the 5 seperate . they did 3 one week and 2 the next.
my son just went for his 2yr well visit. only had 1 shot left to do--now he is good until 200--yeay!!
i have been very lucky. even when i did not ive him the tylonol after the vaccines (like today) he did not get a low grade fever.
every baby is different...
I agree about mixing the shots. No more then one per visit for sure.

I did not know that!
Actually I didn't give any tylenol to my son since he didn't have a fever afterwards, but that is a surprise for me, because every pediatrician recommended tylenol after vaccines (mine and my sisters).

Just to be clear- the fact that you can opt out of vaccinations in California is not publicized.
There are teachers, administrators and most parents who don't even know this and will argue with you that it is not true and that they must be vaccinated. The school nurse is the one who knows and will never volunteer the information unless you make it clear that you know the facts regarding it already. When you do give the nurse the opt-out card she will forever look at you resentfully whenever she sees you...

can i ask the reason why you (in general) would opt out of some vaccines?
my parents came fromanother country and therefore just followed the rules when they got here--never questioned any doctors.
i just tried to be cautious about how the vaccines were distributed. but i never had the thought of not getting my son vaccinated for certain things. i am just wondering if i am missing some valuable info that could pertain to my baby...

Good point. The reason why we would think about skipping it is our doctor said if my son had a bad reaction to his first round that if we wanted to, we can skip the Pertussis component for the 2nd round. I am sure when he meant bad reaction he meant it as very bad as opposed to getting a fever and crying a lot for 2 days. We plan on discussing it with our doctor and probably just go through with round 2 as planned. I'll be honest with you and say that I think I am being a bit selfish in that I hope my son doesn't have any adverse reactions to round 2 that winds up with him in the ER or me losing sleep.

It's in fact a very controversial topic.

For us, I would much prefer NOT to vaccinate my son at all, but after debating and agonizing about it and talking to my husband, pediatrician and doing some research, we decided to go with selected few.

It is a completely personal decision and nobody should guilt you in one way or the other, but here was my criteria:

1.Which disease is the most severe
2.Which disease I know as a mother I would be terrified to deal with.
3.Which vaccines have the least know side effects (actually DTaP doesn't fall into that category, but it fits the first 2)
Hib and PC have the least known side effects and also very serious.
To me, I skipped MMR, Heb B, Chicken Pox, Flu, and Polio.

Then, I didn't do the 4th set of shots for the ones I did give to my son. Actually Max had not have any shots since he was 14months old and if I was to follow the selected vaccines schedule, he is not due for any more shots until he is 7 with tetanus booster.

Yeah, I didn't know that until recently either, and had given my son Tylenol with his vaccines under the advice of his old doctor. Another thing they don't usually tell you is that you shouldn't vaccinate when the child is ill or on antibiotics.
