Must everything be dumbed down and scrubbed for kiddie approval?
I like shopping Etsy because it’s a WOMAN-run site, where (mostly) WOMEN earn a living selling items, handmade or not. What do kiddies have to do with it? How many kids even visit Etsy?

I recommend you get over your horrified prudishness. You’d be right at home in 1600s New England.

This isn’t even about her kids seeing it. She is just that upset.

Up until now, I thought Etsy was a wholesome, wonderful site where I could buy handmade or vintage items, where crafty people could sell a few of their handmade products. I know people who sell handmade jewelry or knitted and crocheted scarves on Etsy. All nicey nice, right? Well, I logged into my account one day and started noticing "mature adult" products in my feed. I NEVER searched for these items, they just appeared one day. I couldn't get rid of them. I went online to see if there was anything about it. Yes, a lot of people are complaining about it. I surfed around to see how to get rid of them and the suggestions don't work. Basically the suggestions said to "clear previously viewed items" but in this case, I had never actually VIEWED these items, they appear in my feed without me doing anything. Trying to clear previously viewed items does NOTHING to get rid of the mature adult products.

These products are erotic/risque lingerie and go down from there. I'm getting pictures of women showing their crotches full throttle, teeny tiny thong underwear that don't really cover the private area, there are women holding their boobs suggestively, plenty of sheer lingerie showing boobs and nipples, and also plenty of buttock shots. Some people online are complaining that their feeds show sex toys and S&M stuff.

I'm not a prude but I don't want to see this stuff. I buy sewing supplies and maybe vintage items on Etsy. I have never once searched for anything remotely "mature adult" on Etsy. It's basically "in my face" and getting thrust at me whether I want to see it or not. I consider it a form of harassment.

Long story, but after multiple emails with Etsy about the issue, they haven't done anything about it. My feed is still showing erotic lingerie this morning and I already sent at least 8 emails to Etsy with pictures of what I'm seeing and how I don't want to see it. Their policy states that "mature adult" products are fine. That's fine if I could control/filter what I want to see. But I can't. There is absolutely no way to control the feed. On the other hand, my Amazon feed shows a whole slew of products that are based on my prior purchases. This is fine.

This is a site that I would have thought is "okay" for children to have access to...but it's not. Just be aware.
Thanks for letting me know! I've been chking on Etsy for some delicate metal flowers, for a project I'm doing. I will prob stay away for now.

I've bought on Etsy, but not lately. I just visited and saw lots of products, but nothing of an "adult" nature.

Sounds like it's something about your account. Try logging out, then searching. If that clears the issue, maybe delete the old account and start a new one.

Could someone at your home have searched for this under your account (if you just closed the window but didn't log out)?

I once had some strange porn like stuff come over my computer and it coincided with a visit from a 20's something male houseguest - whether it was his doing I'll never know.

Perhaps another family member used your computer or phone?

Clear all of your caches and move on.
Good points.

Receiving "suggestions" has always concerned me. Like the time I mentioned dental implants in an email to a relative and all of a sudden I started to get numerous ads for dental implants and dentures and similar products/services. Pretty suspicious.

There were a few times when I mentioned a product verbally on the phone to someone and then started to receive ads for similar products on line. I did not recall ever searching for that product on line or even mentioning it in writing on line. Hmmm. Even more suspicious.

I did a google search on "adult products on etsy" and found this - a three-page discussion of the same issue the OP posted:

OMG! It was four or five years ago when I mentioned dental implants (regarding my late husband) in an email and then received all those ads. I doubt if I have mentioned dental implants in writing since then until I wrote it in the above post here on C D. Less than two hours later I had an email sent directly to me regarding dental implants! The subject line said "Considering dental implants?" IMHO, that is pretty darn suspicious. (Cue Twilight Zone theme music.)

I really don't see how this is a parenting issue, if I were worried about the sites my kid was going to, he wouldn't have access to any online shopping sites.

But it's weird to me, I've never seen these types of things on Etsy and honestly, unless I was looking for them, I wouldn't want to. I'm not a prude, I have no problem with these products being sold, but the fact is that sometimes I sit at my computer and help my elderly mom look for something, and I don't think either of us would appreciate these items showing unexpectedly. But the topic belongs on the shopping forum, not parenting
