This topic reminds me a lot of one of my older cousins, and the way his mother talks about him. (or at least, she used to.....I don't know if she still does.)

I think this must have been back when "Ross" and his wife had recently been divorced, and Aunt Bethany was talking about the ex-wife's new boyfriend. I remember her describing "Fritz" as "not being cute like Ross is", and that was one of the times in my life when I honestly did NOT know what to say.

Reason being that Ross isn't exactly what you'd consider good-looking, and there's just not a nice way to say that.

I think this applies to daughters as well. not just sons.

We tend to see the best in our children and know them as others do not.
