As far as the comment about children dancing at home . . . well, uh, YEAH! Recitals are for family members! That is exactly what they are about! People may be POLITE about seeing 150 other kids "doing their thing" but in the end, people come to recitals not for entertainment but to support THEIR CHILD.
That's the perspective of the parents, not the children who are dancing.
They're enjoying the experience and excitement of dancing for a large audience.
I took my only gdaughter twice a week for 4-5 years and they had a recital every year. It lasted 4 hours. Now, personally, I loved to see all of the dances and dancers. The costumes were lovely and the kids worked so hard, as well as, the studio owner. I enjoyed it.
Of course, the little ones were the cutest.....
I would do it again. I have done it with soccor, baseball, football, band performances, softball, dance. It's part of being a parent or grandparent, I think.
eta: I forgot about the art classes, sitting through those twice a week, one hour each.
What I hated was the "Hollywood Mom" pushing her kids on stage when they had zero talent. Talk about a painful thing to watch and suffer through.
