This may be a silly question and i may have PPD but I have been obsessing over the issue. We live close to train tracks (second house from the tracks) and every 30 min there is a really loud horn noise (intersection) and my newborn (10 days old) is startled every time. He continues to sleep afterwards but i am worried these loud sounds will do some damage.
Please tell me your experiences living near the tracks or your opinion. Thanks
We lived six blocks from the train tracks in our first home. The first few nights it was, "Holy Cow! What was that?"
Been there done that. I lived sort of close to a crossing and HATED it.. Very annoying! SOLD the house and moved to a place less annoying. Not sure, on the baby. If he's waking up and he is startled from it.... Then its annoying him?

Two months later, slept right through it.
My sister had an apartment 1/2 block from a RR crossing. First time I visited for a weekend, I thought “Holy Cow! What was that?” By Sunday, I barely heard them.
Goodness. The train tracks were about 150 feet m/l from the house I grew up in. We moved there when one of my sisters was 3, and I was 4. My parents raised more three babies in that house and another niece for the first 6 months of her life.
None of us have hearing problems. Also consider that your baby is learning to sleep through normal noise. That's a good thing. I was a firm believer in not insisting on quiet and allowing the regular household noise to happen when my kids were babies. That was one area where there was no coddling.
And none of my siblings or I have behavioral issues as adults and didn't as children/teens. As far as I know none of the kids from my neighborhood have behavioral issues. Being startled by noises doesn't cause behavioral issues. You just become used to the trains and don't startle. We all recognize fire alarms. We are able to sleep through thunderstorms, except the really terrible ones. This has to be one of the goofiest things I've seen on CD. I hope it was a poor attempt at sarcasm.
