There was quite the fight over meals earlier on this thread. But it does seem like this doesn't exist because kids are just ferried from on thing to another and parents just blindly go along.
When I was a kid I don't ever remember parents staying at a birthday party. I think those kids would have been embarrassed. There was also no such thing as a play date. You either rode your bike or got dropped off. I think this kind of thing absolutely fosters independence.
I had "play dates", but they weren't called that back then. It was because there weren't any kids in my neighborhood who were my age. Plus, it was a hilly neighborhood, so kids played in their back yards, not in the street. My parents drove me to my cousin's house, which was close enough for me to walk or bike when I was older, but not when I was small. And to other friends' houses.
For most of my childhood, we played with kids who were around who was close to our age. In our four-block area (we could walk or ride bikes), we had a nice little gang assembled. Of course this required that we learned to get along with and come to like whomever that just happened to be, which played a big part in our educations. We didn't choose friends first and THEN play together. Oh, and we played without adult organization, supervision, transportation, or fees; another blessing. Toward the end of my childhood, a few mothers started working and then could afford to move away from our happy post-war housing to the newer, more sterile suburbs. At that point, rides to friends' houses became a necessity.
Legitimate question: In regards to the subject matter of this thread, has anyone actually had real-world experience with CPS and/or other authorities being called on them due to using corporal punishment or similar (EG, dragging a wailing toddler out of a store)? You always hear about people having the authorities called on them when they use “old-school discipline methods”, but I’ve never seen it for real.

How is dragging a wailing child out of a store "corporeal punishment"? Spanking a child in a store so they cry even louder is corporeal punishment. Hustling the child out the door is not.
