Huntingbird, IN (AHN) - An eight-year-old girl from Indiana has survived surgery to seal off internal ruptures caused by 30 magnets and steel balls from a toy she had eaten.
Haley Lents was interviewed on the Early Show on Monday and told the TV show's co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez that she ate the magnets and steel balls because they looked like candies, according to CBS News.

This is probably why I would never get something like Magnetix for my daughter until she's old enough to realize to not eat the parts. Part of me says that the parents neglected their parental duties, but the other part says that these things happen.
I won't even list the stuff that I've attempted to eat....
I have heard of this happening with Magnetix before. I believe a year ago a toddler died after swallowing the magnets. But I am amazed that an 8 year old thought they were candies.
Exactly, it is one thing to have them around a toddler but this child was 8 years old. My son is six and has magnetix and I can't in a million years imagine him eating a bunch of them. It is one thing to have a child, even an older child, put something in their mouth and accidentally swallow it but totally another for an 8 year old to swallow a bunch on purpose.
Absolutely not the parents fault in the least unless they shoved them down the child's throat (or unless the child has mental or brain problems).
I'm not saying this to be flippant, I'm being very sincere. I hope her parents get some sort of help for her. By 8, she really should have a much better understanding of what is and what is not edible. At the very least, by 8 she should have been able to figure out after the 1st magnet that this was not candy.
when i first heard of this, I thought "Oh no, poor little tyke!!!" then, i read on that she is 8. And that it was a whole mass of them that she swallowed. I dont know ANY "normal" 8yr olds that would have eaten even one, much less a whole mess of these things.....I agree with Nelly Nomad....her parents need to get her some help. And I think, maybe the parents need some help too, being they have raised a child to the age of 8 who thinks its okay to do this...what really irked me too, was that the mother is raising a huge fuss, saying these are highly dangerous toys and they should be totally pulled. And trying to sue the toymaker.
Come on, even my 6yr old knows way way better than to eat her brothers magnetix! sigh.

When I read the title, I thought it said "maggots"! Yuck!
Very strange that an 8 year old would do this...
