There isn't an ideal. I picked two because that's what we have. I'm sure if we had one or three, I would have chosen those.

The ideal is different based upon the couple themselves and what is ideal to them.

Having said that.. I voted 2 simply because I was an only child and feel that it stinks. Growing up I would have liked to have a sibling to play with and bond with. During teen years I would have loved to have a sibling to just hang with and have someone to go places with. As an adult, I think about they day when my mother and my grandmother will be gone and realize I will have no one left from my childhood or immediate family (short of my husband and kids of course).

However, despite voting that 2 would be ideal... I currently have 5 in my home and find that to be ideal. I have 2 children of my own and my husband has custody of his 3 kids. Therefore, short of every other weekend, we have 5 kids at home at all times.

Now the ages are quite nice as well. My son is 19 and therefore the eldest of the kids. I also have a 16 year old daughter and my husband has a 15 year old son... their ages work out good as they are close enough to my son's age to get along well, and have each other in school. My husband then also has 4 & 5 year old little girls. This brings us to a much younger spectrum but they have each other as playmates and are very close because of it. The older one's are also kept a bit innocent and playful at home because the little girls bring that out in them. So to me, my 5 children at home is very ideal.

We have 5, the 23 and 20 yr old are from my first marriage and then we have 3 together. It works well for us but I don't want anymore.

We raised three daughters and one son in the 80's through the 90's and were many times criticized for having "too many children!"

I still think 4 is a nice balance.

As many as you can afford, as long as all of them will get individual attention, care, education, and everything else they need.
Having kids because you "want" many of them doesn't make any sense. You can love kids and i understand the urge to have bunch, but common sense must be used in such decision.

2 is ideal in my book. I have one, that is all I want and can afford.
