my son is 2 and is showing so much interest in music that it is inevitable he will want lessons as soon as he can actually realize they exist.
he wants me to play one of his toy instruments while he plays another and anytime he hears music, he is ready to join in.
unfortunately i dont know of any teachers around here.
has anyone ever used any of the DVD lessons? what did you think? any recommendations?
thanks

You might look for KinderMusik (sp?) classes, but other than that, just keep having fun with him musically and wait a few years.

There may be other types of similar classes near you though, just not necessarily the Kindermusic brand. You could ask on a local message board/listserve and people may know. I'm on some local boards/lists and I am always surprised at how many random music, movement, dance type "classes" there are for little ones. They are typically of the "mommy and me" variety, not real classes.

Alternatively, there may be some more adult oriented music activities that it would be okay to bring him along to. For example, one of my friends recently told me that she brought her toddler with her to a drum circle. Or maybe you have some kind of "music on the lawn" type of series that you could enjoy as a family.

My children have all participated in the Music Together program wherever we have lived. They greatly enjoy it!

I agree with the others. Do something like Kindermusik. Continue to play toy instruments together. Sing together, dance together, etc. That will keep his interest alive until more formal music lessons are developmentally appropriate for him. Our DD has seemed to show the same interest and ability since she was a pre-schooler. She is nine now. She sings with the children's choir in church, sings solos from time to time, is in the handbell choir and we are planning to begin formal piano lessons this year. The music teacher at my school said between ages 7 and 9 is a great time to begin formal music lessons and our middle child's band director agreed.

I don't think I would do a tv/movie thing--although it is strictly just my opinion. Let him be more free with his music for now, unless its through a group class or an instructor who has dealt with toddlers before. I guess I just don't like the idea of connecting music with the tv. But then again, I'm a bit anti-TV.

Do you know what instrument he would want to play/you would like him to play? Maybe figuring that out and then finding a good instructor who could give you ideas on what to do until he is old enough for lessons?

We were in MusicTogether too, and loved it.

we have a guitar and keyboard that i aquired over the years and now i just brought him a percussion set.
the one he goes to most is the drums. if we are out, it doesnt matter what instrument he sees, he starts to play with it.
i am going to find a group class around here and in a couple of years i will try to find a teacher for him.
