Potty Training Question
Hi All! Thanks for all the advice and sharing on this board. I love it. I have a quick question, my 2 year old dd has been using the potty now for two days. I went with the straight to panties theory, but now I find myself in a bind....
for those of you who also went this way, what did you do when you first went out in public in the early days of potty training? Did you do pull-ups, diapers, or stick with underwear and clean up any messes?
Thanks from a very happy Mommy!

I toted a diaper bag with an entire change of clothes and a bag to put dirty ones in until my son was four. We went to only underwear almost immediately. However, my son trained late (about 3 y.o.), so he might have been more prepared to totally switch over by that point. But that extra change of clothes helped more than once!

I did my best to stay inside the first few days, but that meant I had prepared. So, if you need to go out, then just bring extra clothes. Don't confuse the child by going backwards or giving them the idea that they could get back into diapers. A few accidents now will be learning experiences. Might not be fun to clean up messes, but it's minor stuff. Good luck.

So what did you do at night time? Did you go to underwear then or stay in diapers? Thanks for all of your suggestions and help! Rep Points all around

Hi again. I had my daughter in panties at night, too. I just made sure she went potty before she went to bed. I also told her that she could get up in the middle of the night to use the potty. Lastly, I made sure to cut back on fluids the couple of hours before bedtime. There were a couple accidents the first few months, but she did great. She was 2-1/2 when we potty trained, by the way. It's so nice to have her completely out of diapers. A lot easier.

They (whoever "they" are) say that if your child can make it through naptime without wetting themselves, then they are ready to go all night without a diaper. I know I read this, but I seemed to have disregarded it. I didn't have my son stop wearing diapers at night until 3.5! Every morning, the diaper would be soaked, so I guess I just thought he wasn't ready yet. At 3.5, I was going to switch him, but then we were about to move. I figured I should wait until after the move, but then one night I forgot that I had the diapers (all of them) still in the wash. I put my son to sleep in underwear, figuring that I would put one on him when they were done drying. Well, then I forgot about that, so we all woke up in the morning to a boy wearing dry underwear! He hasn't gone back since then and only wet the bed a couple times.
I suppose my story doesn't help much, besides perhaps the advice of "it will all work out." I would say, if your child doesn't wet during naptime, try going without a diaper at night. If it isn't working out, put the diapers back on and try again in another month or two. I have heard from other people on this forum that they wouldn't suggest pull-ups, as it doesn't wake them up to let them know they went pee. I didn't use them at all, so this is just heresay.

We put them underwear when we went out doing errands, preschool, etc. I also had a change of clothes in the trunk of the car, as well as in a tote bag to take with me inside wherever we went.
With potty training both my boys, I used marshmallows as incentives. It worked wonders for both kids. I'd take them with me on errands when I remembered to!

He,he,hee...my cousin has had problems with her daughter going pooh in the potty, so she used Peeps (the marshmallow chicks at Easter time). It was a peep for a poop!

During the initial stages of potty training, I would put a pull-up over my daughter's underwear when we went out. She had never used a pull-up before we started PT so she thinks of them as underwear. I don't feel it ever confused her. I still carry extra underwear and a change of clothes in my car in case of an accident.
I haven't pursued nighttime training. She sleeps 12+ hours and I didn't want to disturb her sleep to do the training. Plus, she drinks a lot of fluids all day. Even if I stop drinks 3 hours before bedtime, she still wets the diaper A LOT overnight. She has been able to stay dry during her 2.5 hour nap.
