My oldest child would take a two hour nap. He would go down at 11:30, and then wake up at 1:30. It didn't affect him at night, because the nap was so early.

My youngest child would take like an hour nap around the same time, but then would take little cat caps for like 20 minutes, but it worked wonders for him.

Perhaps you are trying to put your child down for a nap too late- for example, he sleeps from 3-5.

My daughter stopped napping before age 2....sometimes she would be tired, but she just wouldn't nap. I think she was afraid she would miss something. . Anyway, she would go to bed around 8:30 (I think I am remembering correctly).

My 2yo is doing a similar thing - not going to bed until like 10pm. We tried to not let her nap, but it just made her a bear in the evening and then she didn't actually go to bed any earlier. So it didn't work for us. But if it works for you, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Early rising, at 6:30 or 7am, does the trick for us (gets them tired by 7 -7:30pm). Another trick is making the house dark and silent, then they go to sleep due to nothing to do. After they are asleep, the house is lit up again

My daughter is currently living with me with her 1 year old and we have the same problem. The little fellow is so cranky by 4:00-5:00 pm, but if he gets a nap he's up way too late at night way after his company is not near as enjoyable as it is the rest of the day.

I think your doing a great job! If my 3.5 year old daughter naps during the day, she is up until 10-11pm. But if she takes no naps during the day, she'll go to sleep around 9pm. If your child is waking up happy the next morning, you know he got a good night's rest.

I have the last few days not put him down for a nap at all during the day and he was sleeping for the night by 8.00 pm without struggle. Is it ok not to nap your child?

My 2 yr old son takes a 1.5-2 hour nap to wake up no later then 3.30 pm otherwise this interfers with his bedtime and then as a result he won't go to sleep at 8ish. If he doesn't have the nap he is irritable and difficult. With the nap he is good and goes to bed with his milk. It does depend on the child but often if they are very active - running, walking, soft play or playing in the park playground and with other kids then most if not all toddlers should have a nap. Research has also shown its better for their brain development you can reference this on the net. It has also been found that even in adults, having a nap in the afternoon helps improve memory so its best for toddlers to have a nap. It will usually stop them being over tired at bedtime but in my opinion as long as the nap is not taken too late. This may improve their overall health as they will hopefully get an early bedtime and long sleep untill morning and the extra sleep during the day.

I dont like the idea of waking children up in the morning, if you dont have to. If they are asleep then they need the sleep. Other than that, when my son was 2 he still took a 2 hr nap everyday but we through trial and error figured out at what time he had to be awake in order to be asleep at the right time. He couldnt sleep a minute past 630 or he wasnt tired for bed. But if we didnt give him a nap and we were in the car anytime between 6-730, he would automatically go to sleep.

OP, what time do you put your son down for his nap? That can make all the difference in the world.
