I'm all for breastfeeding, but sometimes I wonder if the women who breastfeed a child long after two years are doing it for the child or themselves. There's too many emotional issues with it.

I guess it's just not possible to understand why someone would choose to nurse an older child unless they've done it. Prior to having children I felt 2 was too old but now here I am nursing a 2 and a half year old and it feels totally natural and normal. I know a few almost 4 year olds who are still nursing and it doesn't seem strange to me at all. They are independent, well adjusted kids and their parents are very smart, well adjusted people. Seven seems really old to still be nursing but who am I to judge that woman? The research that I have read says that what she is doing is within the range of normal.

"Normal" to breastfeed an elementary age child? I've never seen a 1st grader being breastfeed by his mommy. It's not normal here in US society. If a person wants to do this & does not like being judged, that's something they will have to overlook. We live in a judgemental society that has set things they find the norm. I just don't know any moms who would feel breastfeeding their 1st grader or 2nd grader (7yrs of age) is really an everyday, normal thing to do. I nursed both my children & it was a good experience but IMO there is a time to stop that needs to be led by the parent & in a manner that does not make their child a social outcast...breastfeeding at 7 or 8 yrs of age would make that child a social outcast here in the States. If a parent wants to do that & not have the stigma attached, their best bet is to move to a country were breastfeeding 7 or 8yr olds is common....and even in the most remote areas of this world I would think that is hard to find....the 7 or 8yr olds are figuring out ways to provide for their families.

It shows a VERY old child breastfeeding and CLEARLY demonstrates the problems it can lead to in later life. Anyone who thinks it's OKAY to breastfeed an older child needs to watch this video!

YouTube - Bitty
You do realize that is not a real video right? It was a commerical for something unrelated if I remember correctly.

Really, no one would know if a 7 or 8 year old child was being nursed unless they were told. They would go to school like everyone else and drink their milk with lunch and eat their food, etc. If they came home and nursed before bed, who would know? They would not be a social outcast. I have never seen a child over the age of 5 nursing, but that doesn't mean that no one I've ever come in contact with nurses their older child.

Good point! In this judgemental society, I can't really believe that anyone nursing an older child would freely advertise it!
