I believe some states have taken it upon themselves to issue a Period when it is no longer acceptable. As Many have said....once solid food becomes part of the regular routine...so should breastfeeding cease. There have been many issues of homeless women and nursing issues (the welfare line).....I believe most states are adopting the solid food "Logic".A child can receive food stamps when they are only a few months old as they are now eating semi-solids....and are not neccessarily breastfed...Foodstamps will buy formula.

I breastfed my daughter til she was 3 1/2, but by then it was only at night while she was going to sleep. It was definitely a comfort thing. She never had a pacifier, favorite blankie or stuffed animal because I was her comfort object. I stopped because it was killing my back, but she would have kept going forever, I think. Then she took to sleeping with a favorite stuffed animal.
A friend bf'd her youngest daughter til she was 5 1/2. As long as the parents and kids are happy, I don't see that it's anyone else's business.

A state giving a mother food stamps (or WIC vouchers) for formula when her baby is a few months old does not mean that they are saying it's illegal or unacceptable to nurse past that! Good grief, I hope you're not passing that info along to women who utilize your services!
Do you really think the state can or should dictate how long someone nurses their baby? Does the baby belong to the state or or the parent??

Years ago a woman came into the office. A hippie straight out of the 60's in the 1980's. She brought her son with her - he appeared to be four or five. While the mother conducted business that kid went nuts all over the office; climbing on desks, picking up and playing with objects on desks, running and yelling. I suppose she thought it was my job as receptionist to entertain her son.
Receptionists, secretaries and general admin support are not baby sitters. Please do not be confused. Control your own kid when you take it in public and make sure it keeps quiet and sits down - my parents made sure I did it - you make sure sure yours does it. Don't mistake people's politeness as honesty. It's our job to remark about how cute the kid is and how cute his annoying antics are when in reality we just wish you hadn't brought it. It's a part of diplomacy and charm that attracts and keeps customers. That's business. Far too many people take advantage of it and don't even realize it because they only think of themselves.
Anyway this kid got hungry and right in front of God and everybody he starts grabbing for his mom's boob and whined that he was hungry. That woman had no sense of embarrassment; obviously no sense of discipline. As she was speaking with a representative the kid just kept trying to grab for it and whining. Everyone was relieved when she left.
I bet that kid is a junkie and in jail today. Parents would rather be a friend and do nothing to quell the kid's creativity and freedom. That's why punk gangs have been on the prowl in greater numbers since the second big baby boom that occurred in the 80's.

Please tell me that you are not passing on these false statements to the women that you work with or discouraging breastfeeding due to your own ignorance. Please educate yourself before passing on false information.
What do you mean by this?

You're right but think about the TEETH!! Not a pleasant thought...
But I think 6 is a bit much. My little boy is 16 months and I could not even imagine him still on the breast. He eats as much as my boyfriend... I would be dying right now... lol

My 2 and a half year old has a full set of teeth and eats a wide variety of foods. She's still nursing. Teeth are not a problem.

my baby has teeth. If they are truely hungry, they are eating not biting. I have many friends and family members who nurse/ed and they NEVER had a problem with teeth.
