Would you be so apt to investigate the contents of a tablet of Tylenol, or Midol, or multivitimin? Maybe Cialis,or Viagra, or Nexium, Boniva, or Genuvia, or Claritin, or any one of the multitude of drugs that are being pushed into our faces on network TV?

I think you're looking for justification to refrain from having your children immunized. I think everyone who does not have their child immunized is depending on everyone who does to keep desease from their child.

I am sure this is true in very large amounts...But in reality,,,Formaldehyde is present in the environment and is a byproduct of metabolism so it is already present in the human body.

Funny how the kids aren't immunized, but most likely they drink bottled water (plain old tap in almost every case, and there's no telling where that tap is and what chemicals it contains), or use chemicals in the house, or slather the kids in sunscreen and/or lotions to soak into the fragile, permeable skin of the child.

Let's go there; all of you who are opposed to immunization, are you aware of the chemical composition of the sunscreen you use? Or everything contained in a bottle of lotion?

Without doing antibody titers on one's children, you can never know if your child has "converted" despite being vaccinated.

In the past, due to herd immunity, this was less of a concern. This is very true... I had titers done when I was going through the application process to volunteer at my local children's hospital... Turns out I didn't have immunity to chicken pox. Now, I'm before the time of the vaccine (I'm 37) but I had the pox as a child. So, technically, I should have been immune.

It just goes to show you that drs aren't completely knowledgable about the immune system. Don't think that because you vaccinate your children they're protected.

College-educated parents may simply have better access to "new" information, the possible downside being that they may overreact (not saying that failure to vaccinate is an overreaction necessarily) before the full picture is known.

They may also be less likely to see doctors (and the medical establishment in general) as "authority" figures and more likely to see them as peers, and therefore be more willing to disregard their advice or seek out second and third opinions.

They may also understand the actual dynamics of our often very twisted for-profit medical establishment, and therefore be more skeptical when certain things are recommended.

It's interesting at any rate.

I think this is an excellent point, which I had not previously considered. I do think that those with a higher level of education are less likely to see a doctor as an authority figure and more likely to see him/her as a peer. I hear my peers frequently discussing the lack of education doctors have in a myriad of parenting subjects, including vaccination, but also breastfeeding, circumcision, co-sleeping, etc. And these conversations often include a lament about how so many patients will listen to that doctor without question and be harmed by that bad advice. I think that in the highly educated population, this attitude does arise from feeling that a doctor is a peer, as well as feeling that we have the resources to be capable of our own research.

I also feel that there are two distinct groups of non-vaccinating parents - those who have made a conscious and educated choice, and those who are non-compliant out of lack of motivation or money. I feel that vaccines should remain a mandatory program with a way to opt-out, as opposed to the opposite, in order to catch those in the second group for public health reasons. However, those in the first group should still be granted the clear parental choice to opt-out if that is their preference.
