News, Doctor Warns About Putting Vicks On Kids.
Putting menthol products such as Vicks VapoRub on children to ease their colds may cause breathing problems, according to a report from Wake Forest University.
Dr. Bruce K. Rubin said rather than clearing congestion or easing a cough, it can stimulate mucus production and inflame airways.

now the question is, do we trust a doctor in this age who has found something wrong with a product that is decently cheap and has worked for many many year, or do we trust the product that has been time tested over and over again for many many years and has worked well enough for those years

oh good golly...most of us baby boomers (ha, tail end here) grew up using the stuff and so did our parents, on our kids and on our granduns and so on. Sure does work, at least helps...
I guess since it isn't 'prescription' it must be EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (no kicks backs for Doc and no free lunches for the staff, eh)

I grew up with my mom putting Vicks Vapor Rub on my chest at night time so I could breathe. I did the same to my son just LAST week. Vicks also makes a baby version, and that's what I used on my 7 year old. It made him feel a bit better.

I love Vicks. Keep it in my nightstand. I guess if a child is aggravated by the smell of camphor or eucalyptus then it could be a problem. Otherwise, the stuff is indispensable as far as I am concerned.
Have a stuffy nose? Just take a Q tip and put some Vicks in your nostrils. Nearly instant relief.
And here is a one for ya - if you have a toenail fungus - apply Vicks on your toenail every nite, put on socks, and in several weeks, you will see improvement - and for many people - the fungus goes away after six or so weeks. I know it sounds crazy. Read this in a news article five or so years ago. Had a fungus problem w/ the nail on one foot - and the doc wanted to give me drugs to cure it that were so powerful - I would have to have my liver checked/tested to make sure the drugs were not causing damage! FORGET THAT!
That was four years ago - fungus never returned.
I LOVE VICKS!!!!

People are getting out of control.
Before you know it we wont be allowed to give our children any medications at all just let them sit their and suffer for an occasional 1 in a million who has a reaction.
I love VICKS and decongestant medication and use it with both my children.

Me too. I'm a pretty old broad and it was always in our house when I was growing up in England and we all had it slathered on us when we had a cold. Too bad that so many older OTC products are too often being dunned by research physicians who, as another poster pointed out, have fiscal ties to pharmaceutical companies who make more money from prescription drugs and fund such frivolous research. All the pharmaceutical ads on TV make me roll my eyes and fall out laughing. Some of them don't even say WHAT the drug is for - all those dancing flowers and lovely-looking elders looking so serene and then the sotto voce admonition, "Ask YOUR doctor if such and such will benefit YOU," with no mention of what the heck it might treat.
Like I'm really going to spend $100 on a doctor's visit for the purpose of asking, "Well, I just popped in because I saw this ad on TV for such and such and it was such a LOVELY ad so I just wondered how it may benefit me?"
And prescribed medication for something like occasional heartburn which glorifies the expensive drug and then VERY quietly and VERY quickly rattles off a litany of possible contraindications like palpitations, rapid heartbeat, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, blood in the stools, etc.... A dash of Angostura bitters in a bit of soda water fixes pretty much whatever ails me when it comes to heartburn or upset stomach (and, helpful hint, cures hiccups too!)
Sorry, you've got me on a roll. My two favorites are:
1. Viagra and it's fellows - "If you have an erection lasting more than six hours, contact your physician." Noooo, really?
2. Attorney's malpractice ads: "If you or anybody you know has died after using such and such, call us." I sort of have the feeling that if I'm dead I'm not in a very good position to call an attorney ...
Cheers!

Why do some professionals or laypeople assume that the rest of the world is stupid?
This is a great quote...and I mean someone PAYS this man...
"Rubin also said that if a child is struggling to breathe, she should be seen by a doctor as quickly as possible."
REALLY? WOW!
Give me a break.
Majority of adults who put Vicks on their children do have some remaining brain cells & use common sense...not, "Wait, it sounds like Johnny cannot breathe! Don't call 911! Just get out the $4 jar of Vicks!"
Actually, Vicks reminds me of when I was sick & my mom would lather me up with that stuff. It actually was comforting to me & brings back memories of when someone would take care of ME when I was sick I survived & obtained my Master's degree...so,no, I did not have long term effects from Vicks.
This doctor obviously has no clients & a lot of time on his hands.
Common sense. It's free & does not require going to a doctor.
