Default One more reason NOT to put my kids in daycare

I've had a lump in my throat since I read this in my paper this morning. I will NOT be putting my children into daycare for many reasons, this being one of them.

This should have NEVER happened. This girl is going to have to deal with the fact that she killed an innocent little kid for the rest of her life.

This is clearly a tragedy, but that doesn't make your statement logical. Since I also had this article open, I'll use it as an example:

North Nashville man kills girlfriend, shoots self | www.tennessean.com | The Tennessean

Should women not have boyfriends', lest they get shot? Just as I wouldn't leave my son with someone who I thought would harm him, I also wouldn't involve myself with someone who might harm me. It's a question of being involved, not hiding from the world. This isn't to say that it's a bad decision in any way to be a stay-at-home mother--only that you can't use every bad news story as an excuse to avoid exposing yourself and your family to the world.

As someone who worked in child care centers for nine years and who currently is a family child care provider, I find this story very disheartening. However, you cannot generalize and say that EVERY child care is unsafe for childen. It is the same as saying that every airplane is unsafe because sometimes they crash, every school is unsafe because of increasing incidents of school violence. EVERY child care center is not bad. True, I have seen centers that should be shut down and teachers who should NOT be working with young children, but that doesn't mean that all of us are bad.

As parents, you need to be involved in the daycare and get to know the teachers. If you suspect anything that doesn't seem right, you need to report it to a supervisor. If the supervisor does nothing, you have the right to call the licensing agency. You also have the right to show up unannounced to the child care center any time your child is in care.

It is very sad what happened, but I'm sure there were warning signs that went unnoticed or unreported by parents or other staff members.

the BF and GF is a relationship gone bad. putting a child into a daycare is telling the day care that you are paying them to take care of and protect your child while you are away. totally different.

*shakes head*

And what if you were at the park one day and some random stranger came up and started killing people? Do you not go to the park anymore with your child?

Oh wait!!! The grocery store too. And the airport... on the road....

This is not a valid reason to stay home with your child.

I was a SAHM for 8+ years. Now that is no longer an option for me as I am now a single parent (not of my own choosing). I never ever looked down on women that work outside the home. We chose to live on one income. That was our choice. Others cannot for whatever reason. Still others are single parent or caregiver families.

Let's not re-open this debate on SAHM vs. WOHM ... over this isolated incident.

Or what about the horrible shootings in schools or workplaces. Maybe we should all never leave the house. I've been both SAHM and working mom. You never know what life has in store for you. Never say "never"...

This is a terrible tragedy, so sad for the baby, the family and the killer.
I don't think, however, that we can indict all childcare businesses because of this horrible incident- parents, grandparents and friends kill kids all too often.

Again: One more reason not to put MY kids in daycare!

If I can protect my child from something that has a very small chance of happening, then I want to try to do so! Especially if they are not missing out on some great life experience by doing so. I can involve my children in playdates to socialize rather than drop them off all day at daycare where I can't see what is going on. I'm not going to fly in airplanes everyday just for fun but if it involves visiting family we haven't seen in a long while it serves more of a purpose and is worth the risk. And as for someone's example of a random stranger coming to a park and shooting a bunch of people, yes, I'd probably find a new park in hopes it would not happen at that one. How do you know it is random by the way????

If you have to work, want to work and have no one to watch your children and you HAVE to send them to daycare, so be it. I respect that. There are many reasons I don't want to send my children off to be "parented" by other people all day and this is just ONE small part.

AGAIN AGAIN: ONE more reason not to send MY kids to daycare.
