It's the hormone of love. It's also called the hug hormone. It's made by the pituitary gland and is released when people touch each other, during an orgasm (in both men and women, I've just learned). But, mostly it's associated with women. Pitocin, synthetic oxytocin, is given to women to induce labor. I think oxytocin is also released during breastfeeding. Just recently, I read an article showing it gets released when women play with their dogs.
So, it's the love hormone. When women get that AWWWW feeling, it can be a rush of oxytocin. But, if you're not a mother or just not into kids at all, then you won't get that surge. That's why I suggested the dog. That AWWWW feeling you get with your dog is the AWWWW feeling we get with babies.
Until I had kids, I never had AWWW feelings about children, so I totally understand where you're coming from.
