I've been doing that with my twins since they were 13, so for about a year now. We have a nearby parking lot that we go to that is kind of private (and not really visable from the street) which will be empty on weekends and after 5 PM and I let them drive there (with me next to them in the passenger seat).

My dad did the same thing with me when I was a young teen.

We live near a high school. I took my daughter to drive in the empty parking lot when she was probably 14 1/2 (you can get a learners permit here at 15) and I did the same with my son at that age. Half hour or so in an empty parking lot it very good practice to learn the basic feel and control of the car. Everyone I know did the same. I don't see what the big deal is in an empty parking lot. I'm sure technically, someone could be sitting looking our of their window onto the empty parking lot, figure out what we were doing and call the police but I seriously doubt anything would come of it.

Here we're pretty rural and go out in the woods and such on dirt roads all the time where you might/might not see people for hours.
If you're out hunting or fishing etc and get hurt whoever is with you better be able to drive or it probably won't end well. I started teaching my son to drive at about 9-10 and his friend used to drive my truck at 10 so if something happened when we were out at least someone would be able to get us out and get help.

13 year olds should not drive. No one should until they get a permit. And to all the people that say it's good practice...that's what a permit is for. If 13 year olds were meant to drive, the permit age would be 13. I never drove until I was 16 and I had my permit because my parents believe in following the law.

I drove at 15 which is when I was able to get a permit...however I started driving about 1-2 months after turning 15 and didn't get the permit until about 5 months after turning 15.

Follow the law or survive... Hmmmm what do I choose.. Oh yeah that's right I'll just lay there and bleed out or freeze just so long as I don't break a law...

To an extent I agree. To an extent I think it sends a bad message to a teenager to teach that breaking the law is ever OK.

There is a world of difference between driving in an empty parking lot and on a public road with other drivers. Hope you never go 1 mph over the limit because technically that is speeding. Just so you know, I am a pretty law-abiding citizen however, I do see cases where people rely on the technicalities of the law in order to avoid thinking and using common sense. Not saying you all have to take your 13 yo kids out for a drive but I think too many people avoid using common sense anymore....
