I agree they should be fed if they didn't bring a lunch even if they don't have money...but why not give them just a piece of bread and the milk. Or just the apple and the milk?

I agree with the most posters on here . And honestly what is wrong with the parents and how hard is it to write a check and tell the kid to give it to the lunch person . I mean it aint the kids it is the parents . some parents are also caught in a crunch these days they have enough to pay their bills and they make too much to get food stamps . what does one do then? there is no easy answer for this .
Heck, that is COMPLETELY different than what goes on in the schools in this area. If a kid forgets their lunch or lunch money OR they don't have enough money in their account the ONLY thing they will give them is two pieces of bread w/ some peanut butter and milk. Not even jelly or an apple. And they get TICKED if they have to do that once for any kid. The teachers are forbidden from paying for their lunch as are the other kids. I've told my kids to buy a lunch if a classmate forgot or their account is out of money but they won't allow them to. I mean I'm talking a kid that has an account w/ money in it setup in the cafeteria and one day it is a dollar short of being able to pay for the plate lunch they will NOT sell it to them at all and be owed a buck and some change. Oh, and supposedly they will ONLY do this for a child something like 3 times in the school year.
The kids who eat them feel humiliated and the other kids taunt them.
It's like segregating the rich from the poor based on what lunch they can afford.

I was just thinking about the "taste/nutrition" part.
So...the problem isn't really with the cheese sandwich per se...it's the cafeteria workers. There needs to be a way to discretely present the cheese sandwich as a choice.
This would be an interesting study...what would happen if you just put the low-cost cheese sandwich on the menu as an option everyday? Would it balance out? I think a lot of kids would choose the basic cheese sandwich over the grey-meat-mystery-glop on any given day.
Hmm.. when I was in elementary school 20 years ago we carried our money (or brown bag) to school to pay for lunch each day and if we forgot it, we just didn't get a lunch. There was none of this pre-paying or "Have a free lunch". Or I guess you could call your mother to come bring it to school. There were kids who regularly ate no lunch because they didn't qualify for free and they didn't bring lunch money. I'm definitely not saying that was a better system, but there was no expectation of anything else at the time.
It's funny, I don't remember having any problems with losing my money as a first grader. I know the majority of the first graders in my class today would not make it to 11:15 with the money still in their pocket. I wonder what the difference is?
I've got kids (parents) in my class who've racked up $80-90 in unpaid lunch at any given time.
The cheese sandwich, apple, and milk sounds really good to me too. Sounds better than my lunch many days!
