Would you say the Golden Birthday is a widely observed thing?
My one son who is currently 8 is coming up on his, and I am considering doing a special, but rather expensive outing for him and a friend or two (museum overnight.) A lot of our "normal" birthdays have been at home, especially for this child, and I guess my older son did get to have one or two fancier parties.
The older son won't have a golden birthday until he's 26, so that seems like there's an obvious disparity there - and I'm wondering how others handle the whole thing.
I have NEVER heard of it referred to as a Golden Birthday-ever...
I guess I am out of it. I know for a fact that we won't be doing anything out of the ordinary from a "regular" birthday
I wonder if its a generational thing? Or regional? Or cultural? Since miasmommy seems to think most people know what one is and I have never heard mention of it, ever, it is apparent that in some circles, it is more common.
I've never heard of it here in Jersey, but I thought it sounded fun. I guess the girl born on the 16th kind of gets shafted out of 2 cool parties though. LOL. Now, would you throw the 26 year old's golden b-day or does he do it on his own at that point?

I was born in the united states. Middle class. I'm 26. That means that I'm pretty "average" and since my own mother braught it up shows that it was present in two generations.
I've heard it mentioned within my own family, friends, husband. I think it was even an episode on the Brady Bunch!!!
It is something cute to look forward to I guess. Mine was when I was 4 and I have a ceramic cat that has the number 4 on it.
I still don't think that is warrents any EXTRA emphasis.
I have never heard of this! I got robbed when I was 11!
Maybe they have "do-over" birthdays?
