just had my first grandchild born-4 weeks ago--he's beautiful (arent they all??) So DIL is doing great at breastfeeding but time is nearing for her return to work so she has to begin pumping. She has a cheap manual one that takes 45 minutes to pump a few ounces. I'm going to buy her one but she and I don't know whether to buy an electric or just a better manual one. Anyone? She will need to pump while at work too, which is ok but it will need to be done faster than the one she has now is allowing.

an electric is sooooo much better.Takes abit to get used to,so try it at home awhile before going back to work.You can even get a double pump to do both sides at once to save time[if that will be an issue at work]The only thing is the sound,not sure what type of privacy she will have at her place of work.They may make them more quiet now,it's been about 8 years since I used mine.If you get a good one it will last through several children as well, if she plans to have more.I remember pumping about 5-7 minutes on each side to get the job done.Good luck!
i had the electric pump and it had a carry case so you could pump at work...in 15 minutes you could pump as much as you need. it even came with ice packs, etc so you can store them till you get home.
mine was Avent--just like the bottles we used for our son.
For going back to work, you definitely want a double electric pump. The Medela Pump In Style is very popular. I used the Ameda Purely Yours which is just as good and somewhat cheaper too. A manual pump is good for occasional pumping at home, but I wouldn't rely on it for going back to work.
The Medela Pump In Style is perfect. It's electric and you can double pump, saving time and sanity. It looks like a thick black briefcase and is professional looking to take to work. It comes with ice packs and has an insulated part in which to transport the pumped milk. It's very easy to use and well worth the money.
With my 1st I rented the Medela pump. Loved it and I should have just bought it but I didn't have the money. It is definately worth it if you can afford it and are going to have more kids.
With my second I used the Avent manual pump. It worked great, but you could only do one side at a time.
