I, honestly, don't remember if they did or didn't. Obviously, it didn't make an impact either way. I felt loved and that's all that mattered.

I do admit not realizing my father cared until he was an adult but that's becuase my mother felt the need to protect us from the fact he was bi-polar. Once I realized that it was an illness that made him behave the way he did, I could, clearly, see the things he'd done over the years that were acts of love.

The words are not important. These days, people seem to say I love you all over the place, but it's very perfunctory. My parents never said it, nor did any of my friend's parents, but we always felt loved anyway. Actions speak louder than words.

Well, they certainly didn't "show" it either. There were a lot of times that there wasn't any dinner on the table. So we all learned to eat whatever was served to us with no complaints. I still have no taste buds to this day...

They sure liked to take out their frustrations on us though.
