For the record, Medicare DOES pay for hospice care. However, Medicare does NOT pay for room and board, which is what you have to pay at a nursing home. The hospice care is the actual nursing, medical equipment, medication, etc.
Medicaid regulations vary by state...some look back 3 years, some 5...I have heard some states look back 7 or are considering looking back 7 years, as far as transferring/gifting property goes. Talk to an elderlaw attorney to carefully weigh your options - ideally well before your health declines.

Some states are looking to a 10 year look-back, Florida is considering making adult children pay for parents too-not sure of all the details on that yet. GET LONG TERM CARE INSURANCE and you won't have to worry about any of this!!!
