I would not let either of my kids get a tattoo until they are 18. Then, they are an adult and it is their own decision. I guess the same goes for any weird piercings, too!
My husband has a couple tattoos, and I have no problem with tattoos. Some of the piercings, I have to wonder about - - - I'll stop at that (don't want to offend anyone), but I am fine with some!
I graduated in 99. I recall at least three teachers with visible tattoos at some point or another. Men and women.
I know a physician at my place of employment with a forearm tattoo.
My husband just got hired on at a fire department and has many visible tattoos.
I am cna and I have 4 tattoos and two are very visible not to mention my two piercings. (my lip one must come out but the nose is allowed to stay in)
I see many successful business ownwers who have tattoos.
I understand that some do not find them attractive or needed and so on. And I definitely respect that view and completely understand how someone could see them that way. BUT it is unfair to say that it will effect employment opportunity all or even most of the time.
Yes, there are many places that allow tattoos, but it would be naive to think that a visible tattoo or unconventional piercing will never close any doors. It might. Depending on the company, your position and the tattoo it could affect things. DH's employees frequently interview young adults who come in with various piercings and are told if they are to be considered for the position, they must be removed while at work. The kids/young adults often get very defensive and go on about how "it's a free country" etc etc. And they are told, "yes it is, and we are free to not hire someone whose chosen appearance would potentially make our clients uncomfortable" (sales positions). Like it or not, appearance is something people judge you on every day. This includes "body art" as well as clothing.
ETA - while DD does have a nose piercing, she is well aware that when she student teaches and probably when she is job searching/employed, she will have to remove it. She has no problem with that and understands why.

I agree. I was responding to a post that made it seem like you could NEVER get a job with visible tattoos or piercings which is NOT true.
And if a person is going for an "office" job or "sales" job I'd sure hope that they would know you must "cover up" or "take them out" on an interview and on the actual job!!!!
Most people with ART on their bodies and/or with piercings aren't looking to work in a "general" office anyhow

The point was, that some places are easier to cover up than others....and yes, at 18 a person may feel that they will never be an "office" type of person, life has a way of taking interesting turns. As a parent, we are just trying to tell them, don't close any doors because you just never know.
Tattoos and piercings (beyond ears) need to wait until 18 in our home. Tattoos are fairly permanent features and sooner or later the child may regret it.
When that happens, they only have themselves to blame.
Watch out everyone with tattoos, some people think you are dirty and cheap tramps!
Whenever a person gets dressed, puts on makeup, gets a tattoo, wears piercings, etc...that person is sending a message to the world. That person shouldn't be surprised if the world gets their message and shouldn't be surprised to hear things like "tramp stamp".

And the people saying those things are sending a message too! Only a not so nice one
"i was just talking to some colleagues about kids and tattoos!!!! i think they have become more mainstream.
and now this? this is crazy.
one of my biggest objections to tattoos is that they look dirty. not all of them. but those "sleeves" do.
then i think that kids get entirely inappropriate tattoos. like spider webs, tear drops, old english lettering and such. those are traditional gang/prison tattoos.
my kids will have to wait till they are adults to get tats. but i discourage them.
aside from lookin dirty.
we live in the hood. AROUND HERE HAVING A TAT CAN INSTIGATE A PROBLEM. most these kids in suburbia think they are cool with their tats. let them come around here and see what happens.
tats are a distinction amongst the thugs. thats the last thing i want for my kids. to be confused for a thug.
professionalism is one reason to avoid tats. thats the argument people mostly use "how are you going to get a job?" bla bla bla.
i wont bother with that. all i have to say is "son, how will you ever make it down 71st to go get milk with all them tats?"
kids with tattoos are out of control.
if a parent sanctions it, then thats not a good parent.

I agree that it's not that nice, but people who get tattoos are very well aware that they are considered low class, tacky and trampy. If they choose to give that impression to the world, the world is merely reacting......
