I just read this article in the LA Times about a 6 year old girl with schizophrenia. I feel for her parents who also have another child and now have to live in two separate 1-bedroom apartments in the same complex. They do this to make sure the older daughter does not attack her 18 month old little brother.

How sad. Schizophrenia typically presents at an older age. I can't imagine watching your child suffer so and also having to care for/protect another child. Prayers to that family.

Update on Jani Schofield, who turned seven in August. I see that the original article was also posted under the Health and Wellness Forum and also ran in the Chicago Tribune. Her parents have incredible dedication. At the end of the article are questions that readers asked about ruling out other diagnoses for the little girl.

I read about her a few months back then the follow up story this past weekend. It breaks my heart to see this child with such a devastating illness and how its affecting her family.

She's now able to stay out of the hospital for longer periods of time but her father is no longer able to work as a professor.

This is a heartbreaking story. I saw a segment on tv a year or so ago.

Her parents are doing more than most. I would probably place her in the facility in FL and just relocate the family. Dad isn't working now anyway so moving wouldn't be so bad. I don't think I would even try to deal with that kind of thing at home. I know everyone is different but that would all just be way too much for me. Constant mental stimulation is not something I could manage.
