That's a terribly heavy burden for any youngster to carry. When kids think you are unhappy because of them (You ARE staying in the marriage for THEM), it's too much to expect them to carry.
You haven't worked for 10 years yet you have an 8 year old child?
My advice to you is the same as I gave a friend who is unemployed and whining about it, but his wife divorced him. They have two children, 16 and 5: STOP FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF AND GO OUT AND WORK !!!!!!
I don't know how any man can sit, complain and not put forth a severe effort to take care of his family. BE A MAN AND GET A JOB. Give your kids good reason to have respect for you.
I think reading comprehension might be somewhat of an asset here. You haven't the slightest idea how much of a severe effort I have been putting forth. My kids respect me because I love them an am a good dad and have been taking care of them since Day 1.
I have been working - freelance, off the books, working at home, part-time gigs (sometimes three at a time), several contract jobs, and a few jobs where I was hired and then laid off because of economic contractions. I haven't been jerking around every day for 10 years. I am a man, damn you, and I have worked hard. My point is, every time I try to get what I consider a real job, you know, a job with a living wage, one that fits my skills, one that has benefits (which I do not have now), I am either told I am overqualified (85% of the time) or the rest of the time I am told I don't have the right experience. You have no idea how many jobs I have applied for since 2001.
I can't make someone hire me. We are in a recession, or haven't you heard?

I am sincerely sorry to read about your situation and I wish I could help in the real world, somehow. In the cyber world, all the help I can think of is to suggest you DO NOT dignify crude, "blame the victim" posts with a reply, whatever that may be.
I dunno about 3, but maybe one........so, you paying?
Still, last I heard, they were laying off PhDs too. I know more than one.
The point is, there are fields out there that are hiring, and since you are an educated man and already have a bachelors and masters, a PhD in a different field may get you a busy and demanding career.
Or, they are always looking for air traffic controllers and they don't require any degree. Pay is fabulous.
There are lots of options but you have to be open to the possibilities.

Right. I do undertand that. But I really don't have a lot of money to be paying for a degree.....but I have been looking into going into certain fields (library science, nursing, physician assistant, and combining this with JD or MBA to assure that I will have some type of future), but the problem is finding a way to pay.

I looked into that, but there are age limits, which is also why I did not join the military.

Believe me, I have looked into many fields. I tried the FBI - they were looking for analysts, but for some strange reason they didn't want me. I tried other gov't jobs and never even got a response.

Well then, we need to do some more thinking. Are you too old, or too young for air traffic control? What is your degree in? There are civilian jobs for the military. What is your area of expertise? What are your interests?
Leave no stone unturned.

What about a teaching certificate? A curator at a museum?
