Is the issue chastity?

I would suggest that a 17 year old boy who knows he is gay has already had sex with other boys.

I have serious doubts about the idea that gay male relationships and development can be easily flip-flopped over in comparisons with teenage male to female relationships - other things. Very politically incorrect, I know.

He's 17. Barring safety issues, I can't see myself telling a kid who is almost an adult that he can't sleep over at a friend's house... Even a female friend's, provided her parents knew and were okay with it (my son is not gay but the same would apply to a male friend if he were).

If anything, I'd say a bunch of young gay men together is more likely to lead to sex than a bunch of straight men and women.

At 17, sure. At 16, no. He's very close to being an adult and off on his own. He doesn't need a sleepover to experiment sexually.

At 17 you have to let go. I rather have my gay son have gay sex in someone's home than in a car or a motel or the woods or somewhere he can be arrested
People need to get over themselves. Your kids have sex the same way you did at his age.
