My daughter wants to, but I refuse to let her until she's at least in middle school (she's in 4th grade right now.) What age were your girls when they started? Thanks.
I didn't let my oldest start shaving her legs until she was around 14-15yo. My three younger ones might even wait a little longer being that their hair is so light and fine and not as noticable. However my oldest did start shaving her armpits around 10-11yo only because the hair was becoming long and very noticable when she would wear tank tops and bathing suits and it was embarrassing for her.
I was 9 when my mother allowed me to use lotion hair remover on my armpits.
I was 11 when she let me use the electric razor on my legs BELOW the knee. That was a rule.
I'm italian. My hair was/is dark. If her hair is light and not that thick, I would say hold off. If it is dark and thick and she is embarrassed by it, then it might be time.
I would avoid razors though.
And please let her know how important it is NOT to mess with all of the hair on her body. Like arms and upper legs and stomach and face. Many girls nowadays are made to feel they need to be hairless and thin and perfect. The hair does grow back thicker and is very troublesome and embarrassing for many. I have a close friend who has been doing electrolosis for years. Many young girls regret "messing" with facial/arm/stomach hair and much more. It is thicker and harder to get rid of. Many have ingrown hairs and stubble in these areas. Now they get these treatements everyweek.
Thanks. Her hair is dark, but not thick or anything. None under her arms. I think I'm going to wait. When she's a little older, I'll either use those buff things (they work) or nair.
Very timely question. My daughter started over this summer. She's 10 so I refused to let her use a razor, but I came across Veet and love it. Its sort of like Nair - a depillatory - but it comes with a spatula. She used it - and then I started. I prefer it to shaving now. And I dont have to be concerned about her being self conscious because of her hairy legs.
My DD was is 6th grade so about 10 or 11. I do agree that those new razors with the cream or soap or whatever you want to call it around the blades are very nice razors. Careful with some of that lotion hair remover, test a small spot to make sure she's not allergic to anything in it, I didn't test first and man I had legs of fire for a while.
I was the "wait until middle school" mom too. My DD is blonde and fair and honestly it was more peer pressure than anything that she wanted to earlier....She was not a social outcase despite having to wait until 7th grade...
I let both my daughters start sometime in 5th grade or so using my "beard trimmer" shaver. It isn't a blade type razor so I was more comfortable with them using it safely and they still got the pits/legs shaved. Now they both insist they have to use razors... and have for a couple of years. That is fine with me, I showed them how and turned them loose.
summer after 5th grade-they make plenty of safe razors now
