Does anyone know what year Oliver Twist took place in? I think it was the mid 1800's but I'm not sure. Also any idea what type of clothing little girls would have worn then? I need to come up with a costume for a school play fast and can't find any pictures or the year online. Thanks if you can help!

Dickens novel first appeared in serial form of course, as many of his novels did. I believe it began appearing in the late 1830's.

George Cruickshank's illustrations are perhaps the best known of the illustrations which have appeared in Dickens novels. There aren't an abundance of Cruickshank illustrations of small girls, but using him as a starting point should help you find more of the works of illustrators whos work appeared with Dickens.

Sorry I can't offer much more...

David B.

http://www.andover.edu/addison/exhibition/2005-Fall/Children_CP_revised.pdf (broken link)

If this link works I think it is a pretty good detailed painting of a girl from that time. Good luck!

The victorian period started in 1837 and continued into the early 20th century

Here are some pattern illustrations for children's historical garb:

Patterns of Time (it's a pdf link)

The simple high-waisted dress on page 5 might work.
